I.) Die Komposition:

Die ‚Musik für den liuto forte‘ wurde anlässlich der Internationalen Basler Lautentage geschrieben und am 13.03.99 in der Schola Cantorum Basilensis uraufgeführt. In der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jh. war in Europa der seit dem 17. Jahrhundert andauernde Ablösungsprozess der Laute durch die Tasteninstrumente quasi abgeschlossen ... die Laute spielte keine Rolle mehr. Sinnbildlich für diese Zeit steht der erste Teil der vorliegenden Komposition, die Suite im alten Stil. Dieser Teil des Zyklus kann auch, um die unterschiedlichen Klangwelten zwischen Teil 1 und Teil 2 noch deutlicher herauszuarbeiten, auf einem historischen Instrument interpretiert werden; eine entsprechende Intavolierung des Notentextes für Laute in d-Stimmung wurde vorgenommen! Zwar wurden die ‚Sechs Modi‘ einer ähnlich strengen Form unterworfen wie die barocke Suite, jedoch sprechen sie konsequent die Tonsprache des ausgehenden 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Realisierung dieser extrem komplexen Werke ist auf der historischen Laute nicht möglich, der liuto forte aber besitzt die notwendige Kraft, Brillanz und Modulationsfähigkeit um den Anforderungen der Partitur zu genügen.

II.) Das Instrument:

Nach mehrjähriger Versuchszeit ist es dem Lautenisten André Burguete in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Instrumentenbauer Günter Mark und dem Akustiker Benno Streu gelungen, eine moderne Laute zu entwickeln, die den musikalischen Anforderungen der Gegenwart gerecht zu werden vermag. Dieses liuto forte oder Neue Laute genannte Instrument vereint die Wärme und Klarheit der alten Laute mit der Kraft und Brillanz eines modernen Tonwerkzeuges. Musikgeschichtlich lässt sich der Schritt von der alten zur Neuen Laute etwa mit der Modifikation der barocken zur klassischen Violine vergleichen, die an der Schwelle zum 19. Jahrhundert von Lupot und Viotti in Paris vorgenommen wurde. Im Gegensatz zur alten Laute in ihrer historischen Form ist dieses weiterentwickelte Instrument auch von Gitarristen spielbar. André Burguete, Benno Streu und Günter Mark wurden für ihre Entwicklung des liuto forte im November 1999 in Paris von der Fondation Européenne des Prix de la Culture mit dem Prix Européen de l'innovation pour les instruments de musique ausgezeichnet. Die Einspielung der CD erfolgte im Juni 1999 durch den Komponisten. Das Instrument, ein 10-saitiger liuto forte mit der Stimmung G, F, C, D, E, A, d, g, h, e', wurde 1998 erbaut von Prof. Günter Mark.

I.) The composition: The ,Music for the liuto forte’ was written on the occasion of the Basel International Lute Days and premiered on 13.03.99 at the Schola Cantorum Basilensis. In the second half of the eighteenth century, the process of the detachment of the lute by the keyboard-instruments was almost finished ... the lute did not matter anymore. Symbolic of this period is the first part of the present composition, the ‚Suite in the Old Style’. This part of the cycle can also be interpreted on a historical instrument to work out the different sound-worlds between part 1 and part 2.  A corresponding intavolation of the lyrics for lute in d-tuning has been made! Although the six modes are subjected to a similarly strict form as the Baroque suite, they consistently speak the musical language of the late 20th century.

The realization of these extremely complex works is not possible on the historical lute, but the liuto forte has the necessary power, brilliance and modulation capability to handle the requirements of the score.

II.) The instrument: After several years of experimentation, the lute player André Burguete, in collaboration with the luthier Günter Mark and the acoustician Benno Streu, succeeded in developing a modern lute that can face the musical requirements of the present days. This liuto forte or Modern Lute called instrument combines the warmth and clarity of the old lute with the power and brilliance of a modern instrument. From a musical point of view, the passage from the old to the Modern Lute can be compared, for example, to the modification of the baroque to the classical violin, made on the threshold of the 19th century by Lupot and Viotti in Paris. In contrast to the old lute in its historical form, this advanced instrument is also playable by guitarists. André Burguete, Benno Streu and Günter Mark were honored for their development of the liuto forte in November 1999 in Paris by the Fondation Européenne of the Prix de la Culture with the Prix Européen de l'innovation pour les instruments de musique. The CD was recorded in June 1999 by the composer. The instrument, a 10-string liuto forte with the tuning G, F, C, D, E, A, d, g, h, e' was built in 1998 by Prof. Günter Mark.
