The 2018 recording of The tree shows six contemporary pieces of music for guitar, 10-string guitar and lute, which are inspired by the pictures of the German photographer Reiner Metzger. The lines, the spots, the nuances of these black and white photographs (Karl Ruhrberg & Reiner Metzger - Der gültige Augenblick. Photographien 1991 – 1999, Ed. Braus; 2000) are the starting point, the more or less voluntary impetus for a musical discourse. The music is both a continuation of the given but also an autonomous system, detached from what could have been the beginning. It is as if the music set out to begin an exploration in which the sound almost seems to question the reason for its existence, its spatial and temporal manifestation. With these six compositions, the German musician and composer wants to ask the listener a question that goes far beyond the work: Are we sure that the art of music can do without everything existing already? This characterizes the intensity of these pieces, which are shaped on three different stringed instruments. They are works in which the desire for experiments is never separated from the desire to offer "the willingness of communication"; and it is a longing that never ends in a full-blown and sterile melodic search.
