La registrazione di The tree, che risale al 2018, presenta sei brani di musica contemporanea per chitarra, chitarra a dieci corde e liuto forte che prendono spunto da altrettante immagini artistiche del fotografo tedesco Reiner Metzger. Le linee, le macchie, le sfumature di queste fotografie in bianco e nero (Karl Ruhrberg & Reiner Metzger - Der gültige Augenblick. Photographien 1991 – 1999, Ed. Braus; 2000) possono essere il punto di avvio, lo spunto, l’incipit più o meno volontario di un discorso musicale che è sia continuazione di un-qualcosa-d’altro, sia impianto autonomo, staccato da ciò che poteva sembrare un inizio, per dare avvio a un’esplorazione in cui il suono sembra quasi chiedere a se stesso il perché della sua esistenza, della sua manifestazione spaziale e temporale. Al di là dell’opera in sé, con questi sei brani il musicista e compositore tedesco vuole in fondo porre una domanda a chi lo ascolta, vale a dire: Siamo sicuri che l’arte musicale possa fare a meno di altro da sé per essere ciò che è? Resta così l’intensità di questi pezzi, plasmati su tre diversi strumenti a corda, in cui l’anelito della sperimentazione non è mai disgiunto dal desiderio di offrire una “comunicabilità” che però non scade mai in una conclamata e sterile ricerca melodica.
